Belle's World - Ego

Does your ego drive you or does your ego get fed by who and what you are?

Ego, in the general sense of our lives today, is defined as "the self especially as contrasted with another self or the world" or simply put "one's sense of self-worth, whether exaggerated or not."1 (Mirriam Webster Dictionary).

We mostly see ego as negative and many of us don't want to be seen as egotistical. However, there is a fine line in defining our own ego to ourselves. What makes a person egotistical (full of themself) versus having a healthy sense of self worth (maybe we define that as confidence)? When used in the "exaggerated" sense, ego can be viewed as conceit.

Does your ego drive you? A way to look at this, is that your self worth & how you define it against others, is what drives you to do what you do. You decide what is going to make your ego feel good and then execute (basically live your life). You expect that the outside world will accept and provide positive feedback for what you are doing and therefore the choices your ego made are primary.

Does your ego get fed by who and what you are? A way to look at this, is that you think about who and what you are first. You decide what you stand for and then execute (live your life). Which then could bring acknowledgment from the outside world and boost your ego but you aren't driven by getting the ego boost because you already are being who you want to be.

Ego as we define in our lives is part of the circle of understanding ourselves. It is critical to understand the role ego plays in our life for many reasons. It helps us understand ourselves in terms of others. It helps us manage our own expectations. It's a deep seated topic that many people have never thought about and are uncomfortable talking about. Yet it is a part of every human being in some spectrum or the other. Having a reasonable sense of your own worth is not a bad thing. It's good for us to acknowledge and be proud of our everyday little victories - in fact, its necessary - for a healthy ego.
